On Studying

What is Studying? When I think of studying, names like Jang Seung-su and Jang Jeong-il come to mind. Come to think of it, they both share the surname Jang! I only realized this after writing it down.

 

Back in elementary school, I was the type of student who got perfect scores on dictation tests and ranked first in both midterm and final exams. I recall it wasn't until around the fourth grade that I started working on monthly workbooks purchased through the school. Even in the sixth grade, when the middle school entrance exam system had become virtually obsolete, I remember solving a few extra workbooks for the so-called "honor of the school."

 

What is a Workbook? It is merely a means to learn the knack of solving problems.

 

What is an Exam? It is a formal process that can only verify a tiny fraction of the knowledge and wisdom gained both inside and outside of school. It is simply a tool to check how well I have acquired what I was taught. Naturally, it is impossible for an exam to capture everything I have learned and felt. I realized as early as elementary school that exams are just tools to gauge a portion of memorized and internalized knowledge.

 

I knew this because I saw how teachers composed questions. I got the perfect scores, and because I was the class president or vice president, I often graded my peers' papers on behalf of the teachers.

 

Looking back at my life through middle school, high school, university, and the lives of my friends who entered society before me, one thing is clear: there is a very low correlation between school grades and the ability to acquire and apply life wisdom.

 

Yet, because of the pressure to "excel at studying," some people mistake the necessary developmental discipline of their growth period for "studying" itself. They push for academic achievement at the cost of character, health, and even financial stability. It is heartbreaking. This only serves to line the pockets of those in the private education industry; it provides no real benefit to either the child or the parents.

 

If private education is used as a way to give a child a brief experience in a field the parents cannot personally provide, the child might feel grateful, and the parents may find meaning in fulfilling their duties.

 

However, beyond that, if there is extra money, I would rather recommend starting an index-tracking fund in the child's name. Or, if you simply need babysitting, a "Lego room" would be a better choice.

 

Children need to sleep more and play more. If we help them build a reading habit and focus on their character, they will grow up just fine on their own.

 
 
 

공부란 무엇인가 공부하면 장승수, 장정일이 떠오른다. 그러고 보니 둘 다 장 씨다! 적고 나서야 깨달았다.

 

나는 국민학교(현 초등학교)에 입학해 받아쓰기 100점, 중간시험 1등, 기말시험 1등을 하며 지냈었다. 기억으로는 4학년 정도가 되어서야 ‘이달학습’이라는 학습지를 학교를 통해 구입해 풀었고, 6학년 때는 중학교 입시 제도가 유명무실해졌음에도 학교의 명예를 위한다는 명목으로 문제집 몇 권을 더 풀었던 기억이 있다.

 

문제집이란 무엇인가 문제를 푸는 요령을 익히는 수단일 뿐이다.

 

시험이란 무엇인가 학교 안팎에서 배운 지식과 지혜를 시험이라는 형식을 통해 아주 일부분만 확인하는 과정일 뿐이다. 내가 배우고 익힌 것이 얼마나 제대로인지를 확인하는 수단에 불과하다. 내가 학교 안팎에서 배우고 느낀 모든 것을 담아내기란 당연히 불가능하다. 암기하고 체득한 지식의 정도를 일부만 파악할 수 있는 도구일 뿐이라는 사실을 나는 이미 초등학교 때 깨달았다.

 

선생님들이 문제를 어떻게 출제하는지 봐 왔고, 받아쓰기 100점을 받았으며, 반장·부반장이라는 이유로 다른 친구들의 시험지를 선생님 대신 채점해 보았기에 일찍이 알 수 있었던 사실이다.

 

그 후 중학생과 고등학생 시절을 거쳐 대학에 가고, 먼저 사회에 진출한 친구들과 나의 삶을 돌이켜 보면 한 가지 분명한 사실을 알 수 있다. 학교 공부와 삶의 지혜를 터득해 실생활에 활용하는 것 사이에는 상관관계가 매우 낮다는 점이다.

 

그런데 '공부를 잘해야 한다'는 강박 때문에, 성장 시기에 맞춰 해야 할 일을 해내는 '훈련'을 '공부'로 오해하는 이들이 있다. 그들은 인성과 건강, 심지어 돈까지 낭비해가며 공부에 매달린다. 참 안타까운 일이다. 이는 단순히 학원이나 사교육 시장 업자들의 배만 불릴 뿐, 아이와 부모 모두에게 전혀 도움이 되지 않는다.

 

부모가 직접 경험시켜 주지 못하는 영역을 잠시 체험해 보라는 차원에서 다양한 사교육을 활용하는 것이라면 아이 입장에서는 감사한 일이고, 부모 입장에서는 도리를 다한다는 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

 

하지만 그 외의 목적이라면 남는 돈으로 차라리 아이 이름의 지수 추종 펀드에 가입해 주거나, 단순히 돌봄(베이비시팅)이 필요한 것이라면 레고방에 보내는 것을 추천한다.

 

아이들은 더 많이 자고, 더 많이 놀아야 한다. 책 읽는 습관과 인성만 잘 챙겨준다면 아이들은 알아서 잘 자랄 것이다.
