it's truly the peak season

명절은 명절이다. 어른들과 장사하는 사람들 표현대로 그야말로 대목이다. 늦게 시작했는데, 네콜을 했다. 퇴근 직후에는 퀵도 네 건이나 했다. 현대차의 그랜저를 시승하며 사직동에서 왕십리를 갔다. 신당역까지 천천히 걸어 갔는데도 콜이 없어 강남으로 갈까, 을지로로 갈까 고민했고,

 

익숙한 을지로를 가다 대치동 가는 콜을 잡았다. 현대차의 제네시스 G80인데 G90일지도 모르겠다. G90 소유주님은 아들과의 관계가 매우 좋아 보였다. 아들 이름에 "로또"를 붙이셨다. 속으로는 좋은 의미인가 하기도 했지만.

 

대치동에 내려서는 역삼동으로 방향을 잡았다. 3호선 보다는 콜수요가 많을 것으로 판단해서 따릉이를 잡으려는데 주변 모든 따릉이가 대여중이다. 걷다보니 역시 콜이 잡혔다. 잠원동 가는 대형 벤츠세단 소유주의 부름이었다. 일행이 있었고, 둘은 단지 앞에서 사이좋게 함께 내렸다. 뭔가 느낌이 퀀트 투자의 대가 강환국작가님 같았다. 풍채며 소유차량 클래스며.

 

그리고 막콜을 잡으로 신사동 방향으로 걸었다. 주현미의 신사동 그사람이라는 노래가 떠오르는 신사동. 어마무시한 노래다. 아, 그날밤 만났던 사람 나를 잊으시려나. 라니. 그 옛날에도 헌팅이 있었다니. 신사동은 그런 곳이었고, 지금도 그런 것 같다. 

 

신사동을 향하던 중 잠원동에서 막콜이 잡혔다. 경기 하남의 망월동 가는 콜인데, 거리가 꽤 있어 따릉이를 빌려 타고 가장 가까운 대여소에 도착할 즈음 인적이 드문 곳인데, 다른 대리기사가 내 목적지와 같은 곳으로 향하는 것을 보고는 마음이 급해졌다. 혹시 막콜손이 선착순을 시킨 것은 아닐까 두렵고 좁스러운 마음에 서둘러 자전거를 반납하고 손님께 달려 갔는데, 오해였다. 부끄러웠다. 그리고 부끄러운 행동에는 후과가 따랐다. 이날 자정 이후 귀가해서 씼지도 않고 잠들었는데, 문자(진동)가 온 것. 놀란 마음에 확인해 보니 따릉이 반납이 안되어 연체금이 부과 중이라는 안내 문자. 혹시나 하는 마음에 전화해보니 전화를 받는 분이 계셨다. 흔쾌히 잘 반납해 달라는 당부를 하시며 반납처리를 해주시겠다는 고마운 분. 오늘도 감사한 날이다.

막콜은 현대차의 신형 산타페인데, 빛가림 처리가 굉장해서 시야가 많이 제한되었던 것이 기억에 남는다. 그리고 뭔가 차내에서 웅웅거리는 공조음이 울린다. 뭔가 잘못된거다. 사륜구동, 오프로드 타이어를 장착했다고 하더라도 이런 소리가 나서는 안될 것 같은데, 뭔가 설계 디자인이 잘못된 느낌이다. 다 잘 만들었는데, 분명 차체 디자인의 결함으로 소음이 발생하는 느낌.

 

The holiday is the holiday. As the adults and business owners say, it's truly the peak season. I started late but managed to get four calls. Right after my main job, I also did four quick deliveries. I drove a Hyundai Grandeur from Sajik-dong to Wangsimni. I walked slowly to Sindang Station, but there were no calls, so I debated whether to go to Gangnam or Euljiro.

 

While heading towards the familiar Euljiro, I caught a call going to Daechi-dong. It was a Hyundai Genesis G80, or maybe it was a G90. The owner of the G90 seemed to have a very good relationship with his son. He called his son "Lotto." I wondered to myself if that had a good meaning.

After the drop-off in Daechi-dong, I headed towards Yeoksam-dong. I figured there would be more demand for rides there than along subway line 3, so I tried to grab a Ttareungi (public bike), but all the nearby bikes were in use. As I walked, I eventually got a call, as expected. It was from the owner of a large Mercedes sedan going to Jamwon-dong. He had a companion, and the two of them got out together amicably in front of the apartment complex. For some reason, he reminded me of the author Kang Hwan-guk, a master of quant investing, from his physique and the class of car he owned.

 

Then, I started walking towards Sinsa-dong to catch my last call. Sinsa-dong, a place that brings to mind Ju Hyun-mi's song 'The Person of Sinsa-dong.' It's an incredible song. "Ah, I wonder if the person I met that night has forgotten me." To think that people were getting picked up even back then. Sinsa-dong was that kind of place, and it seems it still is.

On my way to Sinsa-dong, I got my last call from Jamwon-dong. It was a ride to Mangwol-dong in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province. It was quite a distance, so I rented a Ttareungi. As I was nearing the closest rental station in a deserted area, I saw another designated driver heading to the same destination as mine, and my heart started to race. Fearing that the customer might have called for the first driver to arrive, I felt anxious and small-minded. I hurriedly returned the bike and rushed to the customer, but it was a misunderstanding. I was embarrassed. And my embarrassing action had consequences. I got home after midnight that day and fell asleep without even washing up, only to be woken by a text message (vibration). I checked it with a start and saw a notification that my Ttareungi hadn't been returned and late fees were accumulating. Just in case, I decided to call, and someone answered. It was a kind person who asked me to please return the bike properly next time and said they would process the return for me. Today is another day to be thankful.

 

The last car was a new Hyundai Santa Fe. I remember the window tinting was so dark that my visibility was severely limited. Also, there was a droning sound from the ventilation system inside the car. Something was wrong. Even considering it had four-wheel drive and off-road tires, it shouldn't have been making that kind of noise. It felt like a flaw in the design. They did a good job with everything else, but it definitely felt like a noise caused by a defect in the body design.
